Representing our Apps for Communities category, KidRescue is an application that assists in rescue of street children through support of the population. Developed by three 16 year old students in Brazil, the apps goals are to reduce the consequences (prostitution, drug use, etc..) of children living on the streets of Brazil, increase awareness of the government and the general public about the need for greater attention to Brazilian children, and bring better opportunities to the Brazilian future.
When citizens find children lost or living on the street, they can take pictures and record basic information about the children through their cell phones. Information recorded includes the location and physical characteristics of the children. Then, the app sends this information to the nearest responding agency. This way, the responding agency can expediently begin searching for the identity of the child while sending responders to the location of the child in trouble.
Why it was built According to surveys, 8 out of every 10 Brazilian citizens ignore street children and do not call the authorities to notify them when they find children in the streets. This is often because of lack of time. Also, according to surveys, there are about 80 million street children in the world, and 24,000 in Brazil alone. Institutions of nesting levels close their doors every year because they are low occupancy.
