Our July co-winner is an app designed to help you build your investment portfolio. Many apps exist to help you research stock prices, but physician Mike Serebrennik’s app, StockShop, will help you learn more about each stock – from SEC filings to current related news items. StockShop is an excellent example of employing visualization tools to make data more meaningful and accessible.
The app uses yahoo Finance API to help users with fundamental stock research. It expands on the example Stock Quote app tutorial found on MIT App Inventor website. On opening, the app shows charts of major indices and their values, as well as color-coded absolute and percent change (red for loss, green for gain). A user can research a single stock by typing in a ticker symbol and hitting the "detail" button. The user can also enter up to 3 comma-separated ticker symbols and have the app compare their metrics side by side by hitting the "compare" button. The user can also get access to SEC filings for individual stocks and read news on stocks.
The app uses multiple screens but never keeps more than 2 screens open at the same time. Ticker symbols are transferred between screens so that a u ser can get different types of information without having to retype the ticker symbol. There is also error handling: if invalid ticker symbols are typed or a user types multiple ticker symbols where only one is needed, the app will let the user know this via textbox hints and pop-up messages.
For single stocks, the app displays charts for selectable time periods.
